How to invoice without a company in Norway

You do not need your own company to invoice clients in Norway. With a salary service like Payout Partner, you can send professional invoices and receive payment as salary. Here is how to get started.

Why you might not want a company

Many people take on freelance assignments without wanting to start a formal business. You might be a student picking up tutoring work, a professional doing consulting on the side, or a creative taking on occasional projects. Registering a company — even a simple ENK — comes with obligations: bookkeeping, tax filings, and potentially VAT registration and reporting.

If your freelance work is occasional or part-time, the administrative overhead of a company may not be worth it. A salary service lets you invoice legally without any of that setup.

How invoicing without a company works

The concept is straightforward. Payout Partner acts as the invoicing entity on your behalf. When you create an invoice, it is issued from Payout Partner's organisation number — not yours, since you do not have one. The client pays Payout Partner, and we pay you as salary after handling all tax obligations.

From the client's perspective, they receive a proper, compliant invoice from a registered Norwegian company. From your perspective, you receive a salary with a payslip, just like any other employee.

Step by step: your first invoice

Here is how to go from zero to paid:

  1. Create an account — Sign up on Payout Partner and verify your identity with BankID. This takes a few minutes.
  2. Add your client — Enter the client's name, organisation number, and contact details. If the client is already in our system, much of this is filled in automatically.
  3. Create the invoice — Describe the work you did, enter the amount, and set the payment terms. The platform handles formatting, invoice numbering, and VAT.
  4. Send the invoice — The invoice is sent to your client via email or EHF, depending on their preference. You can track its status in your dashboard.
  5. Get paid — When the client pays the invoice, Payout Partner processes the payment as payroll. You receive your net salary in your bank account, along with a payslip.

What you need to get started

To invoice through Payout Partner without a company, you need:

  • A Norwegian personal number (fodselsnummer) or D-number
  • BankID for identity verification
  • A Norwegian bank account for receiving salary
  • A client who is willing to receive an invoice (most businesses are happy to receive invoices from Payout Partner)

You do not need an organisation number, a VAT registration, or any accounting knowledge. The platform handles all compliance for you.

Things to be aware of

While a salary service removes most administrative work, there are some differences compared to having your own company. You cannot deduct business expenses from your freelance income, since the income is treated as employment income. The service fee means your take-home is slightly less than if you invoiced directly from your own company.

However, for many freelancers — especially those working part-time or just getting started — the convenience and simplicity far outweigh these trade-offs. You can always transition to your own company later if your freelance work grows.
