How it works

PayoutPartner works in partnership with a number of platforms that hire freelancers. Each of them shows you a figure in its own app, and each one picks a different point in the same calculation, so the number you were promised there is rarely the number you see on our platform. This page lines them up against one invoice, so you can find yours.

Enter the rate your app shows you and we work backwards to the invoice behind it, then forwards again through every step. Pick the system you saw the number on, because the same figure means a different thing on each one.

Every figure is shown to the øre, so each column subtracts exactly as it reads. Withholding tax is the one line rounded to a whole krone, because that is what actually happens: it is rounded per invoice line before it is deducted.

Salita is the exception on visibility. Its freelancers see band 3 only, the payslip. The invoice PDF and everything deducted before the salary exists are not shown in their PayoutPartner account, so those figures are marked above. On every other system here you can open the invoice PDF yourself and check each step against it.

What each partner shows you, and why

None of these figures is wrong. Each platform picks the point in the chain that is most meaningful to the people it works with, and every one of them is a real row of the table above.

On PayoutPartner, self-invoicing

Every step, because there is no one in between. You can open the invoice PDF, follow the deductions in your account, and read the salary slip. If a figure ever looks wrong, all three documents are yours to check against each other.

Salita

The amount guaranteed in their government tender contracts with their end customers. That makes it unusually checkable: you can look up the public contract yourself, or ask the end customer what rate is paid out to freelancers who are paid a salary. It is quoted from the salary end rather than the invoice end, so the invoice is built upwards from it.

Luado

The amount the end customer pays. Luado's end customer is usually a private person, and a private person genuinely pays VAT and never gets it back, so the figure they show includes VAT. It is the largest number you will see anywhere, and a fifth of it belongs to the state.

Leii

The amount the end customer pays, excluding VAT. The kind of services offered through Leii are often VAT-free, or are paid for by companies that reclaim the VAT anyway, so VAT is much less of an ongoing concern for someone working through Leii. Showing the figure without it is the more useful number for them.

Staffers

The amount you should see on your salary slip, but before the insurance premium is deducted, and that is deliberate. Staffers does not buy the cover itself: it has an agreement with PayoutPartner under which we buy it for you, and fund it with 1,60 kr per hour worked. Showing the figure before that deduction keeps their number as close to your gross salary as it can be, while not looking like a charge they are making.

One reason your figures can differ by a few øre: an invoice is written in whole kroner, and Staffers always rounds it up rather than to the nearest krone. The exact invoice behind a 240,00 kr figure is 287,95, so it is issued at 288,00. Nothing is held back — most of that difference flows on through the chain to your gross salary. That is why your payslip reads a few øre above the number in the app, and never below it.

Staffers on the insurance: occupational injury and disease cover through LY Forsikring, 1,60 kr per hour

Luado and Leii run the identical calculation. On the same invoice they deduct the same fee, carry the same employer's tax and pay out the same amount. The only difference between those two columns is which row each one decided to put in its app.

Three documents, one calculation. The first rows come from the invoice PDF, the middle rows from your PayoutPartner account, and everything from the gross salary down from the salary slip PDF. They are three views of a single chain, not three separate sums, which is why a figure that appears on two of them is always the same figure.

Staffers is the odd one out. Its figure is the gross salary worked out as though the insurance premium had never been deducted, which is why it matches the gross salary on every column that carries no premium. The gap to the real figure is not the premium itself: removing the premium also removes the employer's tax that would have been charged on top of it.

How much tax does the state actually earn?

Four separate rates land on one assignment: 25 % VAT on the invoice, our 4,9 % fee, 14,1 % employer's tax and your 25 % tax card. Three of the four go to the state. Scaled to 100,00 kr of gross salary, the figure your payslip opens at, here is where each of them lands. Utleggstrekk and the insurance premium are left out: one is a transfer to a creditor rather than a tax, the other is priced per hour and so cannot be expressed as a share of salary.

75,00

reaches you, before any utleggstrekk

69,09

the state gets in total, which is 69,1 % of your gross salary, collected in three places at once

Three taxes, three different bases, one salary. The state takes 29,99 kr of VAT, 14,10 kr of employer's tax and 25,00 kr of salary tax. No single one of them is 69 % of anything: they are charged on different amounts, at different points in the chain, and only the last of the three ever appears on your payslip. That is why the total surprises people who have only ever seen their tax card percentage.

VAT is only neutral when your customer is a business. A VAT-registered company pays the VAT on the invoice and then reclaims it from the state, so for them it is money that goes out and comes back later. A private individual reclaims nothing. They pay the 25 % and it stays paid. That is exactly why Luado quotes the amount including VAT: its customers are private people, and the figure with the VAT in it is the one they genuinely hand over.

So a private customer's money splits almost in half. Price a service at 150,00 kr with a 25 % tax card and it goes three ways: 75,02 kr reaches you, 69,10 kr goes to the state as VAT, employer's tax and salary tax together, and 5,88 kr is our fee. That is the same arithmetic as the figures above, read from the customer's end instead of the salary end: 150,00 kr of price is 100,02 kr of gross salary.

Only one of the three is final. Salary tax is a prepayment, not a settlement: your tax return decides the real figure, and the difference is refunded to you or claimed from you. Employer's tax is final: it is never refunded, to you or to us.
